Shelby Frank, a senior at Minnesota and the returning runner-up in the women's weight throw at the NCAA Division 1 final as well as the reigning silver medalist in the women's discus throw at the NACAC Under-23 Championships in Costa Rica, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing at 8 p.m. Eastern, Thursday March 7 on the infield at the TRACK at New Balance at the NCAA Division 1 Indoor Championships in Boston, Mass. Frank secured second place and All-America honors last year with a 76-10 (23.42m) performance in Albuquerque, N.M. She ranks as the No. 9 all-time collegiate competitor at 79-2.50 (24.14m) from last year, in addition to being among the top 20 female athletes in the weight throw in global history. Frank is pursuing the first Division 1 indoor women's weight throw crown by a Minnesota athlete since Kaitlyn Long in 2018, in addition to looking to surpass Long's program record of 79-11.50 (24.37m), which ranks No. 6 all-time among collegiate performers. She reacts to the news of the men's and women's weight throw finals being moved to Thursday, instead of their usual Friday schedule, in an effort to allow them to compete on the infield at the TRACK at New Balance after several athletes at the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships had their implements knocked down Feb. 22 by the low ceiling in the throwing cage. Frank shares how proud she is of Minnesota teammate Annie Nabwe, also a former North Dakota prep standout who represents Liberia, winning the Big Ten crown in the weight throw and surpassing the 23-meter mark, giving the Golden Gophers a pair of qualifiers for the Division 1 final. She revisits earning a silver medal in July representing the United States at the NACAC Under-23 Championships and being teammates with Jalani Davis of Ole Miss, the reigning Division 1 women's weight throw champion. Frank also analyzes how she improved during her redshirt season last spring, allowing her to focus on the reverse technique in the discus throw and how encouraged she was by producing a personal-best 193-9 (59.07m) in June at the Iron Wood Throwers Center in Idaho, before finishing fifth in July at the USATF Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. She also examines achieving a lifetime-best 215-11 (65.83m) in April in the hammer throw, and the pride Frank takes in being such a versatile, well-rounded thrower under the guidance of Minnesota Coach Peter Miller. Frank reminisces about last year's Division 1 meet in New Mexico and how much she learned about managing her emotions and energy in a championship setting, and how significant it is for her to be returning, along with Ole Miss standouts Jasmine Mitchell and Davis, as the top three competitors from last year's NCAA indoor final.
